Answer :

The Bhopal gas tragedy, 1984 was labelled as a catastrophe because:
  1. Forty tonnes of a toxic gas (methyl isocyanate, MIC) was accidentally released from Union Carbide’s Bhopal plant, which leaked and spread throughout the city.
  2. The lungs, brain, eyes, muscles as well as gastrointestinal, neurological and immune systems of those who survived were severely affected. 
  3. It is estimated that around 10,000 or more people died. 
  4. About 500,000 more people suffered excruciating injuries.

  1. There are was a variation in the safety standards in India because the workers here can be replaced easily owing to huge unemployment. 
  2. Many people agree to work in unsafe conditions to earn wages. 
  3. Since workers are vulnerable, their safety is not taken care of by their employers.
