SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
Que : What are minerals?
Answer :
- Minerals are formed from natural elements and have a definite chemical composition.
Que : ?
Answer :
- Copper is a good conductor of heat and is ductile and malleable. Hence, it is widely used in the electrical industry.
Que :
Answer :
- Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, France, USA, Canada, India and China produce iron
Que :
Answer :
- Minerals take thousands of years to form.
- If minerals are not used carefully, their reserves on the earth will soon get exhausted.
- It is very important to control their use and conserve minerals for the future.

Que : What are the properties of Metallic and Non-Metallic minerals?
Answer :
Based on their composition, minerals are mainly classified into metallic and non-metallic minerals.
Metals
- Metals are hard substances that conduct heat and electricity
- They generally have a shine or lustre.
- They are sonorous and malleable.
- Iron ore, bauxite and manganese ore are some examples of metallic minerals.
- Metallic minerals are further divided into
- Ferrous and
- Non-ferrous minerals.
- Ferrous minerals like iron ore, manganese and chromite contain iron.
- Non-ferrous minerals do not contain iron, but may contain other metals, such as gold, silver, copper or lead.
Non-Metals
- Non-metallic minerals are bad conductors of heat and electricity.
- They generally do not have a shine or lustre.
- They are non-sonorous and non-malleable.
- For example, limestone, mica, and gypsum are non-metallic minerals.
- Fuels like coal and petroleum are also non-metallic minerals.
Que : How are minerals extracted from?
Answer :
Minerals are extracted from the earth in the following ways:
Mining:
Drilling:
- The process of extracting minerals from rocks buried under Earth’s surface is called mining.
- The mining process is of two types:
- Open-cast mining: In the open-cast mining process, minerals are taken out from the shallow depths by removing the surface layer.
- Shaft mining: In the shaft mining process, deep bores (called shafts) are made to reach the mineral deposits that lie deep under the soil layer.
- In the drilling process, deep wells are bored into Earth’s surface to extract petroleum and natural gas.
- This involves simply digging out the minerals that lie near the surface. Redstone and limestone can be extracted by quarrying.
Que : .
Answer :
The presence of the harmful substances in the environment is called pollution.
The types of pollution are:
Uses of Iron:
- Iron is a very important metal that is obtained from minerals such as limonite, hematite and magnetite. These minerals are called iron ores.
- Iron is mainly used to manufacture steel.
- They are used for manufacturing ships, aeroplanes, cars, bicycles, trucks and vans.
- They are widely used in the construction industry to make building support and structures.
- The mineral manganese is a key component in the production of iron and steel.
Uses of Iron:
- Aluminium is obtained from its ore bauxite.
- It is used in building and electrical materials, and in the manufacture of automobiles and aeroplanes.
- It is also used in manufacture kitchen cookware and foil Uses of mica:for personal products.
Uses of mica:
- Mica, which is a bad conductor of electricity, is used as an insulating material in electric appliances such as electric irons and heaters.
- It is also used in paint,
- It is used as a dusting agent in well-drilling mud
- Also Used in making plastics.
