LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS

LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS

Que : What are the properties of Metallic and Non-Metallic minerals?
Answer :
Based on their composition, minerals are mainly classified into metallic and non-metallic minerals.

Metals
  1. Metals are hard substances that conduct heat and electricity
  2. They generally have a shine or lustre.
  3. They are sonorous and malleable.
  4. Iron ore, bauxite and manganese ore are some examples of metallic minerals.
  5.  Metallic minerals are further divided into
    • Ferrous and
    • Non-ferrous minerals
  6. Ferrous minerals like iron ore, manganese and chromite contain iron.
  7. Non-ferrous minerals do not contain iron, but may contain other metals, such as gold, silver, copper or lead.
Non-Metals
  1. Non-metallic minerals are bad conductors of heat and electricity.
  2. They generally do not have a shine or lustre.
  3. They are non-sonorous and non-malleable.
  4. For example, limestone, mica, and gypsum are non-metallic minerals.
  5. Fuels like coal and petroleum are also non-metallic minerals.
Que : How are minerals extracted from
Answer :

Minerals are extracted from the earth in the following ways:

Mining:
  1. The process of extracting minerals from rocks buried under Earth’s surface is called mining.
  2. The mining process is of two types:
    •  Open-cast mining: In the open-cast mining process, minerals are taken out from the shallow depths by removing the surface layer.
    •  Shaft mining: In the shaft mining process, deep bores (called shafts) are made to reach the mineral deposits that lie deep under the soil layer.

Drilling:

  1. In the drilling process, deep wells are bored into Earth’s surface to extract petroleum and natural gas.
Quarrying:
  1. This involves simply digging out the minerals that lie near the surface. Redstone and limestone can be extracted by quarrying.

Que : .
Answer :

The presence of the harmful substances in the environment is called pollution.
The types of pollution are:
 Uses of Iron:
  1. Iron is a very important metal that is obtained from minerals such as limonite, hematite and magnetite. These minerals are called iron ores.
  2. Iron is mainly used to manufacture steel.
  3. They are used for manufacturing ships, aeroplanes, cars, bicycles, trucks and vans.
  4. They are widely used in the construction industry to make building support and structures.
  5. The mineral manganese is a key component in the production of iron and steel.
Uses of Iron:
  1.  Aluminium is obtained from its ore bauxite.
  2. It is used in building and electrical materials, and in the manufacture of automobiles and aeroplanes.
  3. It is also used in manufacture kitchen cookware and foil Uses of mica:for personal products.
Uses of mica:
  1. Mica, which is a bad conductor of electricity, is used as an insulating material in electric appliances such as electric irons and heaters.
  2. It is also used in paint,
  3. It is used as a dusting agent in well-drilling mud
  4. Also Used in making plastics.
