VSA : What is the Medieval period in India?

The Medieval period in India from 6th Century to 16th Century



SA :  Who built the huge temples and mosques during the medieval period? Why?


The huge temples and mosques was built by powerful ruler and wealthy classes in the society
They built due to the following reason 
  1. They wished to show their wealth, power and devotion to God
  2. To earn gratitude of their subjects by building public works like tanks
  3. To show the people that they are closeness to God
  4. Some are kept their name for the temple as it make him appear like god to the people
  5.  Eg : Rajarajadeva for Rajarajeshwaram temple.
  6. By building huge mosques, Muslim rulers act as the ‘ Shadow of the God ‘ who the person chosen by the Allah.
  7. They provided aid to scholars & religious people to turn their capitals into cultural centres to earn fame

SA : Why do Temples are attacked by the rivals or How does temple & mosque  get destroyed?

  1. Temples, which rulers constructed to prove their power and wealth, were the prime targets of their rivals. 
  2. For example, in the 9th century, the Pandyan king Shrimara Shrivallabha attacked the kingdom of the Sinhalese ruler Sena I in Sri Lanka 
  3. He seized many valuables, including the golden statue of the Buddha from the Jewel Palace and other golden images from many monasteries.
  4. Dhammakitti, the Buddhist monk and chronicler, indicated that the next Sinhalese ruler, Sena II, attacked the capital of the Pandyas to avenge the attack during Sena I’s reign and to retrieve the valuables, particularly the golden statue of the Buddha.
  5. In the 11th century, the Chola King Rajendra I, too, took hold of many idols after defeating the rulers of the neighbouring kingdoms, such as the Chalukyas, the Kalingas of Orissa and the Palas of Bengal.
  6. He placed these idols in a Shiva temple in his capital. 
  7. Sultan Mahmud of Gazni tried to establish his political stature by defacing a number of temples in the subcontinent, such as the Somnath temple in Gujarat, and by taking away a lot of wealth.
