VSA : What is Gender discrimination?

Gender inequality is the social phenomenon in which men and women are not treated equally.



SA :  What indicates stereotype exist in the workplace as well as in the household?

  1. Women's primary role is considered to be taking care of the house and the family,
  2. While men are encouraged to work and build a career as they are seen as the bread winners
  3. People often associate profession like teaching and nursing with women.
  4. Profession like Engineer, Police etc are associated with men


SA : Can you describe two methods of struggle that the women’s movement used to raise issues?

Two methods of struggle that the women’s movement used

Campaigning for judicial and social reform like: 
  1. To fight discrimination and violence against women. 
  2. Women groups spoke against dowry deaths, sexual harassment.
  3. Laws were formulated in 1997 to protect women against sexual harassment. 
  4. Anti dowry laws were passed in the 1980’s.
Raising awareness:
  1. Public rallies, street plays, songs, public meeting demonstrations etc were the methods used.
  2. It is a creative and positive way of expressing the views and thoughts of people on the concerned issues and involving more people.


SA : Mention the reasons why many girls do not continue their education?

Many girls do not continue their education due to the following reasons.
  1. Gender discrimination.
  2. Unhealthy condition
  3. Lack of security
  4. Child marriage
  5. Poverty
  6. Forced to look after domestic work and caring siblings.


VSA : What is the purpose of conducting a census every 10 years?

  1. Census is held every 10 years to count the whole population of the country. 
  2. It also gathers detailed information about the people living in India—their age, schooling, what work they do, and so on.


VSA : What is meant by the Women’s Movement?

  1. Women as a whole struggled for a long to bring out all-round improvement in women’s condition. 
  2. This is known as the Women’s Movement.
